Under Android Auto I want to use the phone book

[Android Central Question]

I'm connecting AA on my Smartphone HTC U11, Android 7.x via USB-cable to the Navitainer Kenwood DNX8170DABS.

When I'm calling with AA I have no access to the phone book.
How do I get access to the phone book to choose a number instead of typing the number into the display (and previously searching for it).

If I disconnect the phone from the USB-Port and have a normal BT connection I have all the functionality desired (phonebook)!

Doesn't work with Volkswagen, either. But my iPhone 7+ works great, either USB tethered or by bluetooth. This is a problem with the U11. My M8 worked great with the phone and contacts. So did wife's M9. See here:
