Understanding S3 Beeps and Whistles

I'm brand new to the smart phone world though I at least have a couple of Android years under my belt with a Nexus 7. Bought a new S3 through Total Wireless and so far have been very pleased with it.
Making and receiving calls, texting and some basic internet searching going well.
Haven't been able to figure out all the sounds it throws at me though. Several times a day I'll get a beep, not on the hour or half hour and not, as nearly as I can tell, related to incoming texts or voice mail.
Should probably wait a few weeks until my familiarity level rises a bit more, but if anyone has any suggestions, or any general comments at all, about the s3 I'd love to hear them.

Maybe the option to remind you if you have unchecked notifications is active (something like repeat notifications after a certain time interval). Can't remember exactly where that is on the S3, but if it's not under Notifications, it might be on Accessibility Settings.
