"Unfortunately, Exchange Services has stopped" on my Nexus 7 tablet

Hi Everyone,

I'm switching from IOS to Android, so please go easy on me :)

I've had a Nexus 7 tablet for about 4 days now and until now it has been an extremely pleasant experience. But today I tried to sync it up with my corporate email (Exchange) while I was at work and things didn't go so well. The device said it connected to the Exchange server okay, I told it to activate the account, and then I received the pop-up "Unfortunately, Exchange Services has stopped" with options "Report" and "Ok." I reported the error, but then the same message popped up again immediately. So I hit "OK" on it. Now that pop-up is occurring twice in a row every time I boot up the tablet or try to access the Email app to use my corporate email account (my email is inaccessible, btw. The app crashes as soon as I open Email). This is only the Email app. Gmail app works fine and all other apps are fine too.

I googled this issue and see others experiencing the same problem on various Android devices. The proposed solution is to restore the factory settings, which I think is rather extreme considering I've spent the last 4 days customizing this new tablet. Has anyone seen this issue before? Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this? Here are all the steps I've taken:

- Rebooted tablet (multiple times), didn't help
- Removed my corporate email account from Settings -> Accounts, didn't help
- Tried to find a place in settings where I could disable the Exchange service, couldn't find such a place
- Installed the pending 4.2.2 update hoping it would fix this bug, didn't help

I'm open to any and all suggestions before restoring the factory settings. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ryan

I was going to suggest clearing the device cache, but this likely occurred when you updated your 4.2.2. Still, maybe try it anyway.

Regarding the factory reset, I understand the pain of setting up everything again. I've done it myself after exchanging a defective N7. But if you're only 4 days into your N7, then it will be much less painful now then in 4 weeks or 4 months.

Just create screen shots of each home screen and copy to your computer. This will assist in setting up the same look that you already have. You'll easily be able to download all your apps again, but if you've tested and deleted many apps, you might want to create a list of the ones that you've kept on your N7. Otherwise, as you go through your list of apps on Google Play that you previously downloaded, you may have trouble remembering the ones you use. Of course, you could first edit the Google Play list so it only has the apps you have.

If you're rooted, then simply do a backup with Titanium Backup. If not rooted, do a backup of app data with Carbon Backup (or just backup the app data for selected apps). This should only be important if you have extensively used apps during the 4 days of use, and have built up lots of data on them. Otherwise, it's probably not worth your time.

Thanks MJ. That's a good point... 4 days is a lot better than 4 weeks. And I like your idea of snapshotting the home screens too. I haven't really accumulated a lot of data yet on the apps, so no worries there.

I just restored my Nexus 7 using Settings --> Backup and Restore and I'm glad to announce the issue is resolved. I should have this thing back to its original state (minus the Exchange issue) in about 30 minutes. :)

Any recommendations on what can I do for Exchange? I suppose I could try to set up my account again now before I do any customization so I can revert back to factory settings without worry, if need be. But is this a known bug? Has it been reported before?

Thanks

I got nexus7 as a gift. I am not an expert on any computer or any device tab and patiently I am trying to learn. It was given to me last April.
I noticed that message and I kept on reporting until I got fed up. How can I solve that problem? I will appreciate an assistance.
Thank you.

My wife regularly visits IT to have her email fixed on one of her devices, Android or no. It fails to sync with or without a notice one device at a time. Most often a phone.

Hi, A great thanks Michael, it worked also for me. Setting available in the email application, options -> Sync options. Thanks a lot, Regards, Thierry
