I'm going to have to be returning my Captivate wednesday. While I think its an amazing device, the lack of working GPS (In mine and this is my second Captivate) is crippling to me. I work as a catering delivery driver and i need it for navi. I have gotten by with my cousins old window mount gps but it doesn't know newer roads...

ATT lacks any enticing android offering aside from the Captivate, I already had a Nexus One and Don't want another so, it looks like im going to give the iphone 4 a shot. I've used my friends and apple hate aside its a really nice device. No antennagate issue on his and I'm in a lower reception area, and better reception than my Captivates. Maybe im just really unlucky.

The main reason I'm posting this i guess is some of you might be interested in knowing that ATT corporate stores are accepting Captivate exchanges after the 30 day return policy due to the GPS issue, and the 2 managers i spoke to heard nothing of a fix any time soon.

Its one thing for Samsung to say they are going to fix GPS and update froyo in September, its a whole other story when they actually DO the update. I frankly will only believe it when I see the update. Samsung does not have a good track record.

Some have been unlucky with the GPS issue. Myself I haven't had one problem with it. The others are correct in stating that Samsung has acknowledged this issue and is releasing a fix along with 2.2 at some point.

At some point isn't good enough for me :-/ Its a great device I'm not really knocking it but, it didn't live up to my personal needs and I thought I would share that

The 2.2 update in September is for the EU versions - there has been no announcement on date for Captivate owners to get 2.2.

DONT BE AN IDIOT!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Iphone sux ***! I got rid of mine for the captivate. Don't give up. Don't be lazy. Make the captivate work for you! I've made my captivate better than ANY phone on the market.

Why would i have to *make* a phone work for me? This is my third android phone (had a droid 1, Nexus One before) and this has been the most problematic for me. The small quirks like the lag and having to apply a "lagfix" just to make it a little better... Samsung's Ugly stock messenger app skin...

Guess the phone just isn't for you.
I never had a problem with any more lag than I had on my 3GS.
There is occasional lag doing certain things, but it doesn't happen that often.
The lagfix made no difference for me as far as I can tell.
If you didn't like Samsungs app, you should have just installed one of the other free alternatives. This is android, the phone is what you make of it.
If you want everything to be pretty and generic right out of the box you should get the iPhone.
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but it sounds like you don't enjoy tinkering with it to get it just how you like it.
In a nutshell that's the big difference between iPhone and Android:
iPhone you get something that works well, but there really isn't much you can personalize about it.
Android you get a phone that your personalize. Outside of bugs, if you don't like an Android phone you have no one to blame but yourself.

I know that's overgeneralizing things but you get my point.

Good luck with whatever you end up with.

I too am considering the same. I am going to give them untill the end of the month then its iPhone 4 city for me.

This is the form reply I got form Samsung when I asked about the GPS.

Dear (Sucker),

Thank you for your inquiry and taking the time to inform us about this issue concerning your Captivate.

Regarding your concern on the GPS capabilities of your phone, Samsung Mobile is aware that under certain conditions, the GPS on our U.S. Galaxy S devices may not be meeting performance expectations. We are diligently evaluating the situation and will provide an update as soon as possible.

We are unable to speculate when or if a software revision addressing this feature might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion.

Should this become available, it will be posted on our website in the Samsung Download Center.

Sincerely my GPS is pathetic... No luck with the 2nd phone? I have heard rumor that some LUCKY devices it actually works on! hahah

Welp got my iphone. Its great except the screen is defective. It has a dark brown faded area on the screen. Shweet. Lol, well att will be replacing it but i have to wait because all of the stores around me are out of stock. :x

jp i recommend you do it soon because it seems (at least around me) the iphone 4 is hard to find, you may go past your 30 day return waiting for one to come in stock. All i have to say is, its smoother and faster than the captivate, the touch screen is 10 times more responsive... Bash apple all you want and lol at my defective pixels, its a good device. Oh and i made a few phone calls in a low reception area with no case on it and it worked :O

I just wanted to chime in on my opinion of your comparison. It is not faster than a captivate IMO.

My brother came to visit me recently. We literally both got our new phones within a week of each other.

He got a iPhone4, I got the Captivate

We did test after test after test and my Droid CONSISTENTLY outperformed his iphone(albeit by just a small margin on SOME tasks). We did everything from:
Opening a webpage (not preloaded or in Cache)
Opening MULTIPLE tabs
Creating a new word document using Docs to Go
Taking pictures
Downloading a file to our phones from the internet
Placing a phone call
etc...

The ONLY thing his phone was able to do faster than mine is bootup quicker. I think its because of the scanning media action that happens on my phone.

All that being said, I also agree that the iPhone is a very nice device(my wife and one of my daughters own iPhones). I do think the iPhone does some things (currently) better than (certain) Android devices; but I also think that it is just a matter of time before Android will far surpass iOS.

Good luck with your i4, I am sure you will enjoy it. Droids are not for everyone; just as iPhone4's are not for everyone.

On a side note:
I am also somewhat dismayed at the somewhat subtle 'hostility' and rudeness to mdunn; just because his views differ from members here on his phone preference.
Its a PHONE yall, we are not talking politics or racial inequality here.
ITS..... A......... PHONE! (really stop and say that statement SLOWLY)

At the end of the day we are all neighbors on this big rock and should appreciate the fact that our differences is what makes it all worthwhile. Show some love. :)
