Universal Messaging question

The little red mailbox widget that comes stock in the X....
Has my FB and Txt messages but no Gmail.
Gmail is a separate widget.
But, when I look in accounts, my gmail is in there.
I thought I could send/receive emails thru that universal messaging thingy?
Red/white mailbox that says 'messaging' underneath.
Was I wrong? If not, how do I do it?

On a similar note, I prefer to use the unread gmail widget to put on my desktop, but I cannot figure out how to get my corporate mail to act accordingly. It will only show up in the universal messaging.
