Unknown or (Unknown) - When Dialing Numbers

When dialing a number, I seldom include the area code if it's not necessary because why dial 10 digits when you can dial 7 ...I know I could navigate to the People app or do a Search People and dial from there but I frequently just dial the number instead.

Every phone I've ever had is aware of my home area code and translates a 7-digit number to a contact if I dial without the area code but not my Incredible. For example, I dial 111-1111 and the phone automatically knows that I'm dialing Joe Schmoe (one of my predefined contacts) who's number is 222-111-1111 because my mobile number is also in the 222 area code. For some reason Android or Sense or something isn't smart enough to figure this out or there's a setting I haven't yet found.

The setting that seems like it would apply to this situation is under Settings | Call | Assisted Dialing | Area/City Code. I've confirmed that my area code is there but it makes no difference.

Is everyone else experiencing the same issue or did I miss a setting somewhere?

Thanks!

10 digit dialing has been a requirement in my area for 15 years now. Get used to it cause its not going away. You might find it easier to type in their name instead of their number.

Also in my area even tho my mom is living right beside me I have to include the area code or it says the call can not be completed. This dialing from my blackberry cuz still waiting on incredible , but its been that way on all the phone's for a few years here to.:) You can't fix what ain't broke lol also :p

It's been a requirement in metro Atlanta (3 area codes service the area) for so long, that NOT dialing the area code seems odd to me.

Whether or not it's required in your area is not the issue. In my area, we have three main area codes and 10-digit dialing is only required for the two area codes that your number does not reside in. Because of this, 90% of the numbers I dial are in my area code so I still dial 7 digits.

I would still like to know if anyone comes across a fix for this issue.

Thanks.

VZW is in the process of upgrading all their switches to require 10 digit dialing. What area are you in?

Phoenix, which does not require 10-digit dialing for a number within the same area code to which you are dialing.

Dial the 10 digit code! :D

When I move away from my home town I kept my home town local cell number. I got used to giving all 10 digits when even giving my phone number to some one. Now that I'm back I still give the area code when asked for my number.

I have always entered the 10 digits in my phones contacts number field regardless if they were in the same area code I was in. The reason for this was that if I went out of state and tried to dial someone back home it was required to dial 1+area code even though my phone number was the same area code. I remember inquiring about this years ago when I thought I had a problem with my phone and was told by a Verizon tech it was because I was in a roaming area. Anyway, I would just set up all your contacts this way so you never have to worry about it again.

Yeah they just added a new area code in my area on the 1st of last month. Luckily all my numbers have always been added to my phone with 10 digits so it wasn't an issue for me, but I know a lot of people it messed up. Thank god for having people out of town I call or it would have never been setup that way!

All of the saved numbers in my phone are entered in 10-digit format. The only real issue is that when I get lazy and manually dial a number with 7 digits, the phone isn't smart enough to know that the number has to be in my area code and thus fails to make that connection and show the name of the person I'm dialing.

Admittedly this is a minor issue overall but it's annoying...especially considering that the last four LG flip-phones I've owned had no trouble performing such a mundane task but my new whiz-bang Android phone can't...hehe! I still love this phone.

I would just type their name and not their number.

I could do that but I have over 2000 contacts so a lot of results appear until I've typed quite a bit of the name...probably not up to 10 digits though.

Is that all, lol

Is that by typing in their last name or their first name ? , How much of the last name do you have to type to get a contact's info to pop up ?

That's my entire client database plus my personal contacts.

Of course it varies by contact but there are a lot of clients with the last name Davis for instance so that's a bit more difficult.

It's only a matter of time.

I too do not need to dial the area code to call in my area. This seems as a bug for the Incredible. My wife just got the Droid X and it can bring up the contact info without the area code. What is needed is a fix for the rest of us until that time they make the switch. Hell, even my dumbphone (blackberry storm) knew which contact I was dialing without the area code. Also, its seems silly to me that this was over looked.
