Unlock Samsung SPH L720 Sprint Galaxy 4 Phone for use by another Sprint customer

I have a friend with a Samsung SPH L270 Galaxy 4 from Sprint. He told me that he wanted to give it to someone in his family that also had sprint and they told him that since the original account had been canceled, he was prevented from doing that.

I would like to unlock it for him if this is possible. Assistance is greatly appreciated.
