unlock screen on the hero?

I setup that lock pattern mostly because i think its kinda cool, but I still have to hit menu, slide that bar down and tehn unlock the phone, is there anyway I can bypass the middle step, just hit menu and then do the pattern? I know the G1 on 1.6 can do this because my friend has one.

problem solved, thanks, is that an HTC thing then, because on the G1 you hit menu once... I figured it would be an android thing
