Unlocked and Rooted - How Do I Flash the 4.0.4 Radios?

Hopefully someday I will have enough knowledge/experience with Android that I can actually help someone!

You just flashed a radio. You know how many people (with Androids) never do that?

Give yourself some credit :). What's even better is you got experience with recovery, flashing, and customizing your phone. That's what droid's all about, really.

At least for me.

Yes, I am excited to start experimenting with custom ROMs. I really like the ones that have the wallpaper extended to the full screen. Can't wait to play some more!

On the subject of problems with Windows XP, it is normally the "preferred" version of Windows by most devs. Vista/Win 7 have been known to cause more issues and not play nice with drivers & tools used in rooting/hacking and ROM/theme building.

If you want a trick with wallpaper--download Flikie (or Picspeed or Wizardii; I prefer Flikie because I get more consistent results where Picspeed sometimes crops/cuts off, but that could be user error :p). Save a photo (1440 x 1280 is the preferred resolution), go to the gallery, find the photo, hit set as. Then you'll see the Flikie option. Hit that. No cropping, it extends throughout the screen and is really nice.

That's what I thought and one of the reasons they will get my Windows XP machine away from me when they pry my cold dead hands off of it. I wonder why I am having difficulty?

Gnex Girl --

You need to download Rom Manager from the market, and flash clockwork recovery (which is inside of RM).

You should flash the radios and the 4.0.4 bootloader.

Essentially, take the zip and put it on your phone (use your USB). When you install Rom Manager, open it, and "reboot into recovery." You'll see a similarly worded option. Do that. It'll say install from zip. Go there, choose the file, and boom.

For CWM (recovery), volume up/down moves the cursor, power selects.

I'm already rooted running on the codename rom. which is 4.0.3 so if i want to flash the 4.0.4 radios am I going to lose my root or will it just not be compatible because of the difference in firmware

You can flash just the radios with CWM. The radios are independent of the ROM/Kernel.

I think you should be fine on codename because the ROM take care of the file that causes you to loose root. The OP was on a stock 4.0.2 ROM. Heck I think you could even flash codename when you flash the radios for good measure.

Maybe someone can confirm this? I won't have time to play with my phone until later this week otherwise I would just try it myself.

Some of the radio zip files floating around are not just the radios but the 4.0.4 bootloader as well. Not sure if that would make a difference or not.

Maybe you already have but if not make a backup in recovery or using ROM manager before you flash anything. This way if you ever have any problems you have something to restore to and it's nice to have a stock rooted backup anyways.

Yup. As a general rule of thumb, if I'm the slightest unsure about something (i.e. 100% of the time), I backup. Also keep your zips in a folder (or in the base directory). You never know!

That's interesting. Did the LTE patch properly? I've had the exact opposite results, hence I'm asking.

I'm starting to think maybe it was a bad flash. Who knows. I changed mine over to CDMA only (while on 4.0.4) and it seemed to be fine. I may give it another shot this weekend.

*EDIT* Did some quick reading, I'm going to flash them using the fastboot method (I flashed them with CWM before) later today. Maybe that will help with my issue.

I had a bunch of screenshots on XDA with what the radios should look like before flashing the 4.0.2 radios/bootloader, after that flash, and then after the flash to the 4.0.4 radios/bootloader. I'll get them and post them later so you can see where you should be at each step. If you meet those, then you should be good. I know when flashing from 4.0.3 radios that people have experienced only one radio flashing because one of the radios (LTE, IIRC) needs to patch from its 4.0.2 counterpart.

If it helps, my screens are on either page 8 or 9 of the "4.0.2 to 4.0.4 radios" thread on XDA, under CDMA GN Development.

Edit: Just saw your edit (lol). I'm not sure if that's the problem; if you didn't go back to 4.0.2 radios/BL, I think the problem was probably flashing atop 4.0.3 and not flashing completely. I've seen/read that if you simply flash again you should be ok--but my personal advice is to flash 4.0.2 radios/BL, reboot, go back into recovery (from either CWM or restart menu), and then flash the 4.0.2 to 4.0.4 zip from there. At least that's how I've been showing folks ;).

I'll give you a little background on my current phone. It's actually my brand new insurance replacement. Immediately after taking it out of the box, I unlocked bootloader, rooted and flashed AOKP milestone 3. Now that being said, AOKP is 4.0.3. I'm assuming the radios were still 4.0.2 since it was fresh from the box. I flashed the 4.0.4 radios over the 4.0.2 radios.

Also, my new GNex came with a brand new SIM card. For a test, I took the SIM card from my GNex with the cracked screen and put it right in the new phone. It worked! But maybe that has something to do with it.

AOKP uses 4.0.2 radios, that's correct. What I'm uncertain about is the bootloader. I presume 4.0.3, but I have no idea of knowing, that's why I flashed the 4.0.2 package then the 4.0.4 package. No conflicts, nada.

So with the sim card switch everything's fine? Go to your settings/about phone--what radios? EK## (two of them) or FA## (two of them)? If the latter, you have .4. If the EK, you have .2. You may have one of each, which is what I presume to be going on, but obviously I could be wrong. ;)

I flashed the 4.0.3 radios (listed over on RootzWiki) and everything seems fine. And yea, the SIM card switch was fine. Didn't experience any issues. So now I'm sitting with a spare, brand new SIM card.
