Does it get updated frequently for security updates? I know with in the past Samsung has been terrible with updating the unlocked models.

Yes it updates frequently. I sold my note 9 in December and it was on November security patch. None issue.

Every single month since release for my unlocked 9. Usually around the middle of the month.

Unfortunately it does depend on which carrier gets it first . I've downloaded Verizon unlocked rom when TMobile unlocked didn't receive it yet.

Then you would be using carrier Fw, not samsung unlocked Fw.
Unless the states is different, there is no carrier unlocked. Only carrier Fw or Samsung unlocked Fw.

( I ran carrier Fw on my unlocked note 8 to both enable VoLTE and get quicker updates. Not an issue on my 9. Volte out the box and monthly updates on the button.)
