Unlocked Voicemail

Hubby just got new Note 20 Ultra and put the SIM card in from his Verizon Note 8. What's the story with setting up voicemail on unlocked? I seem to recall that you can't get the .apk for VZW voicemail and instead have to use the Samsung which is built in to the dialer. He tried a long press on #1 on his dialer and it's asking for a password - is that password for VZW or Samsung?

The password is on Verizon's end.

Ok he can get his VZW voicemail now but there are not any notifications?

Sorry for all questions but he is technically challenged and I don't have his password to get in and work on phone.

Is there another voicemail app to be used?

Have him go to Settings>Apps, then select the Phone app, and then Notifications. Make sure the toggle for Voicemails is turned on.

Tried going out to phone app and rhe setting to toggle voucemails is grayed out. So can't do anything with it.

But is the toggle defaulted to On?

Yes. If he does a long press on #1 on dialer it takes him out to his VZW voicemail. I think he just gave up and downloaded YouMail? If I had known an unlocked phone was going to be this problematic I don't think I would have purchased one for him. Of course if I could physically work on the phone myself instead of having to have him unlock and do his password stuff it would be a lot easier but that's another story...

Ok. These kinds of things can be a hassle depending on the carrier.

One last thing he can check if he's interested is to open the Phone app, go to its Call Settings, and look for the Voicemail Setup. Make sure the Voicemail Number is his own 10-digit cell number followed by a # (he should also be able to add his PIN after the #). www.verizon.com/support/voice-mail-faqs/

Thanks. I will have him check this last suggestion. One other question - anything to think about as far as SMS or MMS when you are using an unlocked phone? I heard him mumbling something about having to make a selection about which app to use while he was trying to set up his phone this morning.

He should probably just pick the stock Samsung Messages app (although Google Messages is also good). To minimize confusion, I'd just pick one and get rid of any others.

I try to use stick one but I do go between samsung and google message app, google has RCS on unlocked Samsung.
