If I was to purchase an unlock code for my Orange UK Desire, would I have to still root my phone to get the 2.2 OS from HTC or could I download it normally with the phone now being unlocked from my carrier?

Thanks in advance,

Paul.

I'm fairly certain you would receive the update normally, over the air. I've never tried that myself though, so I can't be sure... but if it is unlocked, it should be treated as any other phone. :)

I have seen several posts stating that unlocking dose interfear with updates but if you debrand NOT root you should be ok to use an unlock code you then get updates direct from HTC ie the ganeric OS.

Thanks for replying Sonicaholic and Seek. That's what I thought, debrand should mean it's open so it shouldn't be governed by the carrier.

If you hear anymore on this I'd appreciate more replies thanks.

I'm going to look and try other forums so if I hear anything more myself, I'll post more info.

Just to add, I spoke to a guy from Orange UK today and he mentioned he had an open handset and he's been running Froyo for 3 weeks.

I have a vodafone UK handset I debranded my device and updated it to FroYo about 3 weeks ago myself, once I heard that the update I had been offered was little more than a hboot lock and full of unwanted bloatwere. It has worked perfectly and without any trouble eversince so I can safely say this works, I have had an O2 sim in it since and I didn't need an unlock code to do so. Just make sure the radio version is the HTC vanilla one.
