Unlocking from Verizon

My dad gave me his galaxy tab 2 because he got a new one on his Verizon account. When I go to turn on the tab to connect it to my wifi it will not move past the Verizon screen. Is there a way to unlock it from Verizon or is this tablet now a brick? I have done a factory reset on it and that does not help, and I have taken out the sim card and it is not affected.

Clarify a little bit, I got confused to it. Well check the WiFi system and the application systems.
