"unmount sd card" why?

i took mine out without unmounting today by mistake and nothing happened..... why do we have to unmount (especialy when theres no apps running from it on s3)
and whats the risks if we dont?

it closes any writing left to the file system to ensure you do not corrupt your file system or have any corrupted files.
 
Removing a memory card without unmounting it can ruin the card if something is reading/writing on it. I did this by mistake with a flash drive on my computer.
