Prototype dual-screened 2-in-1 Android smartpad from Imerj preview -- Engadget

Seriously I just don't get it. I do not see this bringing anything better to the table that what the Echo already has.

  • It is closed outward-facing so both screens are exposed when carrying.
  • The hinge looks really simple. I looks like my Libretto opening and closing "backwards".
  • It is bigger yet has the same resolution.
  • It has an unidentified processor that will be "newer" - yet and phone that comes out later can have a newer processor. An Echo hardware refresh could have a newer processor.

Now if it had dual retina display that would open up to a 960x1280 resolution I would say that was something. But as it is I see a less elegant implementation than the Echo. I like the fact that the Echo is much smaller than say an Evo yet has twice the resolution. I like the way the hinge works on the Echo. I think there could come another leap in this kind of implementation but I do not think the unit in this article is it.

And since this seems to be the one of the few Echo user forums that doesn't have "fail" in their post titles I was curious what other may think.

It's hard to get too excited about a device that is still listed as a 'prototype'. I've seen a lot of prototypes that have looked really cool and promised the sun, the earth, the moon and the stars only to deliver none of these things.
The prototype is also by some companies I have never heard of before, which makes it unlikely we will see them breaking into a market dominated by the likes of Motorola, Samsung and HTC.

However, I'm totally sold on the dual screen phone as I love my Echo. So seeing some competition in this area would be great. I only hope that the Echo got enough traction to warrant an Echo 2. My suspicion though is that it hasn't since there has already be a 100 dollar price drop and you can buy the thing through Amazon for 19 bucks. Makes me sad.

I do not like the imerj prototype. It has a few good ideas, especially with new interface. Expanded pinch in core apps should come to Echo anyway.

The battery is a 1750mAh permanent li-poly unit. Screens are bigger and more efficient, but they do not look as good. Triple screen display? But only when docked apparently. (no wireless presentation functionality) This thing is huge; outer dimensions roughly similar to a pair of 4.3" phones glued together, minus 1-2mm total thickness. Extra size did not come with 960x540 panels. Unspecified dual-core CPU from TI, 1GB DDR3. Hinge is totally pants; if there is no positive lock it will probably get floppy over time. I feel this device takes more aggressive liberties than the Echo, and it is probably before its time.

It will probably cost even more than Atrix or Echo at launch.

Pretty nice specs (1GB ram, AMOLED, bigger battery, dual core), but nothing an Echo 2 couldn't have as well.
