Unnecessary applications running

I'm new to android so sorry if this is a newbie type of question.

I'm noticing a lot of undesired applications that seem to be on in the background regardless of if I use them or not. Most of these can't be removed from the applications manager in settings from what it looks like.

Is there anyway to turn either:
1) delete the unwanted applications that VZW forces on us
or
2) make sure they stay off as to conserve battery?

The only way to remove or freeze Verizons pre-installed apps is to root the phone.
