Unread email number not showing on gmail icon on home page

The number of unread emails is not showing on the gmail icon on the home page. I could swear it did when I first set up my GS4 about a week ago. Could there be a setting that I changed that caused the number of unread to go away?

I dont think mine ever showed the unread count. Are you sure it wasnt the stock email app that you are thinking of?

Maybe it was the stock email app. But, shouldn't it also show on the gmail app icon?

It's not stock...I use Nova Launcher and there's an addon called Tesla Unread that gives you "badges" on icons...like Gmail. It works great.
