I can still see my folders, which have what I expect to see but over a few days hundreds of pictures have appeared. Some of them are simple system graphics (like stop buttons), some appear to have come from Evernote and some just aren't familiar. I can't see them in the file system and they also appear when I use such apps as Quickpic. I am running Android 4.3. The main recent changes are that I moved my music and pictures to my SD card - which appeared to have worked OK and I have replaced my battery with Zerolemon extended battery, which shouldn't affect this sort of thing.

I am having the exact same problem. Hundreds of images are appearing in my gallery. They look mostly like images that have been in emails I've received, company logos, social media buttons, how do I make this stop!

Try turning off Photos Sync, Picasa Sync and auto upload by Google +

Turn off any photo syncing. Hopefully that helps but I see this issue alot.

It is media services. It scans the memory cards (internal and external) looking for media files. It will show them all.
