Unwanted results in contact search

When I search in my Contacts app, it shows a ton of results for people I don't know, and they seem to be coming from one of my email accounts. None of my other email accounts do this. Is there a setting somewhere that specifies where contact search results come from?

Which phone? Are those contacts showing up intermixed with your own contacts, or do they show up at the bottom of the list? In the Google Contacts app of my Pixel 6 Pro, I'll see "Other contacts" related to people I've emailed in Gmail. I can't find a way to get rid of that, but since the names are way at the bottom of the list, they're unobtrusive.

This is on a Galaxy S20 FE. The other results only show up at the bottom, but they are literally people I've never had contact with. It's like it's pulling from some extended contact list. It does look like the Gmail app shows the same list when I use that account, but I don't understand why. It's only for this account, and seems to happen only on my phone. If I use the web version of Gmail, I don't see this behavior.

Go to the system settings and look at the Accounts menu. Is that email account listed there, and if so, do you see the Contacts toggle turned on in the Sync Account option?

I tried turning off that Sync Account Contacts option, but I'm still getting those contacts when I search. It's not a showstopper or anything, just annoying, but it seems like there must be a way to stop this from happening.

After turning off the sync toggle for that account, did you also clear the app cache/data from the Contacts app and then let it re-sync again?
