I rooted my phone and froze the bloatware, but I have since unfrozen it and I'm still getting this error when trying to update. Any suggestions?

Hello-
Same issue as the OP (rooted but did nothing with the bloatware)

I attempt to install the update // phone shuts down & reboots // I go to about phone >> check for updates & a system pop up appears saying the 'Update Status - the software update failed!" And the option to download the update again appears. Done this several times. I appreciate your willingness to help

That's really weird.. does it get far enough to tell you whether its the 5.5.893 update everyone's been getting or this new 5.9.901 thing some people are seeing? (check in General section, some folks are discussing it)

I had the same issue updating to .893. I couldn't figure out what in the hell the problem was...until I found out that I had uninstalled Swype and installed the beta. Maybe something was modified and is preventing it from installing properly.

I get the OTA message saying that the 5.5.893 update is available, and I get the options of "Install Now" and "Install Later", with a timeout period of 30 seconds which defaults to performing the update.

As I was writing more for the post, I realized that the original boot logo and animation have been replaced with something of my own doing, and that I've been staring at it for a couple days now trying to figure this out. Is this something the update would check against? I am going to look into returning it to stock and see if that fixes the problem I'm having...but please continue to post ideas until this is resolved!

I turned on the boot animation, and remembered that I have a modded battery icon through Clockwork's ROM Manager. Anybody know how to revert that? Also, I need a copy of the original boot logo so that I can reflash that, waiting on a response from the team blackhat forums on that one.

Does anybody know where the update is downloaded to, and if it's accessible from root explorer? I'd like to not need to re-download it every time, especially since there's no data access in my area right now (outage).

I have a droid bionic.
I'm trying to update my phone to .893 But everytime I go to about phone > system updates, it's immediately pops up with the window asking me to setup a moto blur account.
When I click setup account it doesnt even let me set up the account, it just searches and it force closes.
I am rooted though.
Could that the reason I can't setup a moto blur account to do the system update?
What do I have to do to get the system update?

Well, I have the solution!

As I expected, the boot logo was causing it. I had to download the full FXZ, which I found a bit cumbersome, extracted the logo from it, flashed it, and now my phone is completing the update as I type this.

For those of you in the same boat:

Instructions:

As always, I am not responsible for stupid mistakes. Try at your own risk.
Download: http://www.overkillhq.com/downloads/tech/bionic/fastboot-stocklogo.zip

Extract the archive somewhere that's easy to access. I use C:\phonestuffs.

Reboot the phone into AP Fastboot mode (from off state, hold both vol +/- buttons and turn on, use the - to change selection and + to select).

Run the included "fixlogo.bat"

That's it! You'll see the logo as the phone reboots.

I'll keep working on this guy to perfect it, but this should do the trick.

R3L3ASE3ROOT and FOR3V3RROOT work great for fixing this. Returns the phone to bone stock, roots and forever roots the phone. Just make sure you back up your apps and data with titanium backup, backup your contacts ans SMS just in case too. You might want to make a nandroid of your current phone state, because if it works now, it'll at least be a place to return to.

Tapped on my Bionic running KIN3TX.

@overkillsd... so download that zip file to a computer or to the phone... same w/ the extract, where should it go?

I downloaded and extracted the file and placed the "bat' file in the sd card of the phone... ran AP fastboot nothing happens since i don't see that file anywhere... could you help?

Extract to your pc, fastboot is a command line program for the phones to allow modding. To boot your phone into fastboot mode turn it off, hold both volume keys, and while still holding them, turn it on. See google for specifics. If you get stuck on anything else post here and ill try to get back to you. Im at work atm so its not easy to get back.

figured it out but when the program starts running it has the "waiting for device" so somehow it's not seeing the phone... either way I wonder if I have the same issue as the person you were trying to help. I get the software update failed after the phone restarts, but i don't see any visible issues w/ the boot or anything.

no custom boot logo and I no frozen apps/deleted... is the best thing left to do just unroot w/ Pete's tool then root w/ it again, and then do the forever method and finally update?
