Update killed my "Ok Google search bar" on home screen

In these incessant updates I get, the last one took out my Google Search Bar widget on the home screen. I tried to disable Google and re-install the old original version in place of the 'new improved one.' This worked for a few restarts then I was back to no voice recognition and no Google search bar.

Looking in widgets it wasn't there even a search wouldn't shake it loose!

If I open the Google app, then I get a bar that has the microphone on the right side and it looks like the one I want but it isn't. I must touch the microphone icon to make it hear my voice, THEN it works but its not on the home screen as it once was.

The Ok Google thing has worked beautifully all this time but now it's hosed. What to do? I did NOT do a hard reset. and if we get it to work again, how do I stop those Google updates from biting me in the butt??

Running Android 8.10 on SMT580

Thanks a lot

Re: Update killed my "Ok Google searcy bar" on home screen

What widgets are shown under Google in the widget list?

Re: Update killed my "Ok Google searcy bar" on home screen

hi B Diddy,

Well there's Google - Google Play Music - and that’s it! The Google Search Bar that usually says " Say Ok Google" is residing on the home screen but is inoperative. There's no prompt on it to say anything.

Tnx,

Strange, Google Play Music should be under its own category. Can you show a screenshot of the widgets listed under the Google category?

Re: Update killed my "Ok Google searcy bar" on home screen

Tap Google -- the "3" in the upper right corner of that box indicates that there are 3 widgets associated with Google. I'm betting one of them is the Google search bar widget.

Re: Update killed my "Ok Google searcy bar" on home screen

Of course you were right! The search bar/box was one of the 3 items. I put it on the home screen but I get no response to" Ok Google" or the like. What am I missing here?

Each time Google updates it seems to kill the voice recognition aspect, sad becase it's very handy. I have tried removing all updates to Google and let it use the original version, That seems to fix it sometimes now I don't know. <sigh>

I cleared the cache to no avail fwiw.

Tnx :D

Hi, did you clear data, cache, force stop the Google app?

Hi, did you clear data, cache, force stop the Google app?
I used the key combination of the home key the power key and the volume up to flush the cache. Then I went into the list of apps selected Google, and then chose to "uninstall updates "That did the trick the search bar now says " say OK Google." And it works fine now, but the problem is the next time it wants to update I'll have to go through the same thing again and keep on installing the updates. Is there any way to prevent the thing from updating when you don't want it to?

Thanks very much for your help it's nice to have that feature working again it's very handy to be able to pick up the tablet and say a few words and get on with a search great stuff thank you very much.

Re: Update killed my "Ok Google searcy bar" on home screen

8.1.0

Maybe turning off auto updates woul prevent this from reoccurring? Hate to lose all the others tho'

Yeah that probably stop breaking but then you don't get the benefits of the update

Re: Update killed my "Ok Google searcy bar" on home screen

I am updating manually ignoring Google updates, takes more time but doesn't mess up the voice command.

Thanks!

Re: Update killed my "Ok Google searcy bar" on home screen

Turn off auto update for the google app

The only tign I see under settings in Google Play is " Don't auto update apps" pretty all inclusive, I do not see one only for Google.
