So the 15th of May is just around the corner. Anyone heard any updates about what's going to happen with it at that time?

was in store tonight, asked a rep-- (shut up, i know how reliable they are :) )

she confirmed $29.99, but said she wasn't told how much data that covered.

once again--taken with a grain of salt.

More like the entire shaker after the way this phone has been. >.>

I called today and said I wanted to sign up now to ensure no interruption in service. They couldn't sell it to me. They said when I attempt to use it on the 15th that I will be prompted to accept the new rates. They said they don't know the rates yet.

That's crazy. 2 months after the botched release, they're still fumbling around with almost everything regarding this phone. Granted it's not as major as the release itself, but still..

Root, WiFi free tethering, $29.99 I think not.

Meh, I was gonna leave it to someone else. Thanks for covering that point.

I don't condone the "stealing" part of it, but the price is so outrageous that they deserve ever rooted tetherer out there.

$29.99 huh?

That store rep is full of it. We have no official word on pricing for 4G MBBC/MHS features. Period.

$29.99 makes sense, and is honestly not the worst pricing I've heard, but that is in no way the official word.

Its listed when you sign up. Its $44.99 for a hotspot and $29.99 for unlimited data. So if you want it to continue after the 15th, its going to cost you more per month.

Where was that listed at? I didn't see that on release day when I picked it up.

I think you are referring to the Mobile Hotspot device, not the feature add-on for a 4G phone. Completely different animal requiring a completely seperate contract at a completely different price.

How is it stealing? When you make your home internet WiFi is that stealing? Cause is the same thing!

i don't consider it stealing.
it's in the OS, just like on a Nexus phone.

Froyo brought about wireless tethering--the carrier (VZW) blocks it.

that's like GMC making a Hybrid Suburban, and a local Racecar-driver owned (don't know why i had to throw that in there--every dealership around here seems to be owned by some old NASCAR driver) dealership locking that Hybrid capability & charging me to unlock it. i bought a GMC with the standard features--features from GMC (one of which is wireless tethering), i expect to use them at my discretion without payment to access them.

granted, this does give rise to "i paid for unlimited data, who cares how i use it?"--which could most likely be given a rebuttal of "well then they're going to allow tethering but move to tiered data so you can use your data however you want, but only up to a certain point."

i could be overlooking a very valid point against this argument--and i welcome it. this is just my initial reaction & i'm welcome to change it given logical evidence or contradicting points.

possible argument against: it's built into the OS, but it's only the ability--not the right to use it. that's the carrier's discretion.

I don't condone the "stealing" part either but stealing is open to ones own opinion/beliefs, but I RARELY (1-2 month) use it for a total of maybe10-15mins. Those that are using this "app" as a total replacement......you do screw things up for everyone..it's about moderation, and not abusing.....I do not feel I should have to pay $30 a month, when my monthly bill is $150 (would be a little over $200 if not for corp. discounts) and I would use the service very minimally.....to each there own.....

It might not be stealing but it's definitely against VZW Terms Of Service on the contract you signed. They have the right to charge you or cancel your service if you tether without paying.

I was told via a phone call that an update will be pushed to our phone to patch the free hotspot trial. From there you will have the option to continue the hotspot tether, with purchase.

That's a bad analogy. It's more like you paying for one all-you-can-eat buffet and then handing the food out the door to 10 of your buddies that are dining on the sidewalk.

They price their service based on the amount of data an average person would consume on a phone. When you tether, you are increasing the average amount of data you are likely to consume.

Just like a restaurant pricing an all-you-can-eat buffet at the price of what an average person would consume at one sitting. When you pass the food out the door to 10 of your buddies, or stuff the food into a suitcase, you are violating that arrangement.

nice argument.

now i don't know what to believe :)

either way, i don't want to pay for it. and rooting is already looking promising with the constant delay of the RUU.

The other option is to call Verizon and have the hot spot turned on when you need it. Then call and have it turned off.
I wonder what would happen if hundreds of thousands of customers started to do that?
