Update profile?

Can someone please clarify... I went into settings to update my PRL and I noticed it had a spot for "update profile" also. What exactly is this and do I need to this often as I do the PRL? Thanks...

I believe this tells the phone which cell-towers / channels to use, i.e., when to roam off-network?
