[UPDATE] Wifi Assistant Disabled by Verizon

Re: Wifi Assistant Disabled by Verizon

I have a Verizon bought Pixel with a Verizon sim and have WiFi Assistant. Settings>Google>Networking.
Don't know if I did anything different than everyone else, but it was there the first time I checked.

Is everyone on the NDE63P update and rebooted?

This worked for me. Thanks.

Re: Wifi Assistant Disabled by Verizon

I am definitely on NDE63P and have restarted multiple times, no luck.

You and I are in the exact same boat. So frustrating and nobody seems to have any idea what to do. I did 3 chats with Google support and nobody knew the answer. Factory reset was the only suggestion. I really don't want to do that though

Re: Wifi Assistant Disabled by Verizon

I love the idea of WiFi assistant. Latches onto good wifi then sets up a VPN. Glad Google is sharing this for all :). I have unlimited at the moment so I just stay on LTE when out and about but this will make me feel better when they take my unlimited away one day (or I have to switch for other reasons) :P.

Re: Wifi Assistant Disabled by Verizon

Settings > wifi > gear icon also gets you to wifi assistant

Re: Wifi Assistant Disabled by Verizon

I'll say this again for people who don't like to read the whole thread.

There is no option in wireless settings and 'Google > Networking' doesn't exist.

Same for me, and I have a non verizon pixel.. I will let you know if they come up with a better solution for me...

Re: Wifi Assistant Disabled by Verizon

I purchased my phone from Verizon this morning and noticed that Wifi Assistant is not listed as an option in Wifi settings. Nor is there a "Network" sub-category under Settings>Google.

I noticed that the feature seems to be tied to the following application:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.gcs&hl=en

Which can not be installed to my Verizon locked Pixel XL, "This item is not available on your carrier"

I just got off of the phone with Google support. After a long process of holding and consulting with specialists they decided to consult with Verizon. Eventually they connected me directly to a Verizon rep who confirmed that the carrier is disabling the capability.

The google rep also confirmed the feature is turned off for Google Fi subscribers.

Haven't tried to install the apk manually.

Pretty sure this needs to be installed for wifi assistant. My Verizon bought Pixel has it installed. I didn't manually install it. It was already installed when I looked for it in the Play store.
In my VPN settings it shows wifi assistant.

Mine just showed up 20 minutes ago. I was on a 30 minute phone call, got off, and check again for the 100th time, and it was finally there. As long as you have the latest build and Google Connectivity Services installed/enabled, it will eventually show up. I think for some of us it just took a really really long time (like 23 hours for me). Just be patient, don't factory reset or anything, just wait. I know it sucks but it will show up

That is good that is working for you, but we honestly don't know what happened to make it show. Maybe something you did but don't know you did it? All I know is the 24/7 support is honestly terrible.. They flat out ignore everything I tell them. They have upgraded me to a "Product specialist" now.. Lol..

I hope mine appears like yours did but I feel like contacting just to be safe was a good idea.. But so far it is getting nowhere,

Re: Wifi Assistant Disabled by Verizon

Have you tried taking the sim out, doing a factory reset, setting it back up and seeing if you get those options and then putting in the sim?

You're right about support. I did chat support support 3 times last night and they were useless. They just told me to factory reset, they have no idea. I'm not the only one who had this experience with it just showing up though.. There are other threads out there with people who have the exact same problem and say it just showed up eventually. For a lot of them, it showed up much more quickly than it did for you or me. I know it's hard, but stop beating your head against the wall with support because there's nothing you or they can do (other than update the build and install GCS). Other than that, it's just a waiting game.

That is my final option, but shouldn't be the option for a 18 hour old phone... I really do not want to go through the whole setup again especially since I have a trip I leave for in 5 hours. Granted I would wait until after the trip to do it if I have to, but would much rather not.

I have tried an ATT and T mobile sim now.

Agreed it's not ideal but support will probably have you try something similar to that anyway.

So basically the 24/7 much talked about support that "upped" the price of my phone is 100% useless...LOL.. I love google and NExus phones, but so far the support feature of this phone is a joke.should not be a selling point.

Apparently our phones weren't supposed to come with 7.1. You know one of the main features of the phone... Sigh they really have no clue and will say anything to get you off chat.
