Update with no data plan

Sorry if this was answered, but I couldn't find in search.
I want use my jailbroken iPhone(unlimited data) as a hotspot for my Xoom.
I am wondering how I would get any updates (ota) that are available for it. I'm sure Android central will announce when they are available, but will a notification be sent to the xoom (on wifi) or email?
Or do I have to have a data plan to ensure I receive them?
I wouldn't want to miss the flash/ sd card update.
This is my first android device and i'm not sure how updates are handled.

You SHOULD still get the OTA update without a data plan. If you don't, you'll definitely hear about it here, and you should be able to manually update.
