Updated firmware and lost icons on home page

Have Samsung Galaxy S and just updated to 2.3.3 using Kies. Both this time, and the last time I did a firmware update, all the custom settings I made on the home page are lost. Only the default Gmail, Maps, Talk, Market and Write and go icons are there. And with 2.3.3, on the second page there is a new widget from Samsung.

Should I expect to lose all the custom settings? How can I prevent it? (Or restore them?) I don't understand why I should customize the 7 (!) home pages if they are lost with every firmware update.
