How has OP's history of updates been? I'm considering this phone but haven't made up my mind yet.

Inconsistent! But they always promise to do better. Sometimes they are ok. If you want all the security patches, OS updates etc, as fast as possible then the Pixel line is your best bet. If you want to save a few bucks, consider the original Pixel or Pixel XL.

A little patchy at times, but not horrible.

My 3 and 5 are both on the April security patch (beta and stable respectively), although the 5 was on December until the April.

For bug fixes they've always been on the ball though for the most part, and are one of the quicker manufacturers when it comes to OS updates.

I've been seeing more consistent bug fixes and security patches since getting on the beta track (which is very stable). Just got the May security update yesterday actually.
