Updating To GB from stock unrooted Froyo Question

Ok so here is my question,

I'm not rooted and on stock 2.2. When the OTA update for gingerbread rolls out, won't it factory reset the phone as part of the update process?

I ask this because I kind of want to root, and I want the official GB update when it comes, and to go back to unrooted stock from rooted ROM "XYZ", I'll have to wipe the data anyways to go back. So if I have to factory reset either way I might as well root.

Thanks

Why even consider rooting, then unrooting just for the "official" GB update? Once you root and flash a custom rom, you'll never go back to an unrooted phone.

Since you are considering rooting then unrooting, I guess you need to think more about WHY you want to root.

Defiantly. I would never want to give up Cyanogenmod, and if you want gingersense there's a ROM for that, and many gingersense ROMs have newer versions of sense which the official update likely won't have. And if your just going to root and unroot again I would just stay unrooted and wait for the OTA, rooting is defiantly not something you do on a whim.

I agree with ucluglee and the dark wizard about rooting. Not a decision to take lightly...it's not life or death but its definitely something you need to mull over for awhile.

To answer your question about the OTA, no it will not wipe or factory reset your phone. Can you imagine the holy hell Verizon would take if everyone lost their paid apps, settings, contacts etc etc.

If you root and then take the OTA Gingerbread when it comes, you will lose root. You may or may not be able to get it back after the OTA because a new root method will have to be found.

This has been confirmed.

If you want root, you should root now and NOT take the OTA. There will be Rooted versions of the OTA out shortly after the stock OTA rolls out.

Thanks guys for all the reply and insight. I think now I will wait sometime AFTER I get the GB OTA to take the plunge.

Thanks all
