So I was watching television, and I saw a commercial for the Galaxy S; the first one I had seen, as the phones have yet to be released in the US(I think?). Anyway, I thought it was interesting that the phone displayed was the original Galaxy S, and none of the major carrier specific versions(not the Epic, or Captivate, etc.). This doesn't mean that the original will be released in the US, does it? Or has it already been, and I have just failed in my searching?

I saw this too.

And it got me wondering if that phone can be purchased for AT&T bands? Why advertise something that is not for sale?

This site: Samsung Galaxy S Review
says:
The quad-band GSM supports 850, 900, 1800, 1900 bands. The tri-band UMTS supports 900, 1900, and 2100 bands, which means this phone will opperate on At&t's 3G 1900 band.

But is there any place to purchase that phone without a carrier getting involved?
