Just wondering if us sprint user are ever going to get a fix in hangouts with the SMS character limit.
Anybody have any insight or tricks, hacks?

Well SMS is limited to 160. So probably never. I suggest you try another messaging app. I don't know which one to use, I am content with hangouts

Are you saying it is less characters for Sprint users?

Yes I thought it has been well known that it was a sprint issue. It just stops at 160 characters instead of continuing on and make it 2 messages. Was hoping to stay with hangouts because I do like it, but this one problem sucks. Hoping that since its been out for a few months there was a fix.

This has nothing to do with sprint, but the stock messaging app on nexxii. I had a galaxy nexus and the same thing happened. The only fix is to get another messaging app.

I think it's the app as well. Other apps will split the messages if it exceeds 160 characters. So consider another app if you run into the limit often.

OK thanks for the clarification. I believe that people using the nexus5 on att or T-Mobile dont have this problem, so is it a combination of carrier and app? Just trying to understand it.

This is exactly what Hangouts does for me; I don't understand why people are saying it does not.

If I open a new SMS in Hangouts and type a bunch of random stuff, eventually on the far right of the input box - just above the Send arrow and just below the greyed text "SMS", will appear "10" meaning that I have 10 characters left in the current message. As I continue to enter text, I eventually see "145/2" meaning that I am now into the the 2nd part of a split message and have 145 characters remaining. With further typing, the 145 number decrements until I reach "0/2" and the very next character entered takes me to "152/3".

If I send this message to someone with traditional SMS app, they will receive the message broken up into three (in this case) separate texts. If I send it to myself, Hangouts will display it as a single large message.

And so I ask you - what is the problem?

Mine splits them just fine though I'm using Straight Talk. Do you have the Group Messaging enabled? I'm not sure if this is the setting needed or not.

SMS is 160 characters period, no matter what Cell technology you are using. Was never meant for sending a chapter of a book. Just some cellphone sms/mms messaging apps could break up and merge incoming and outgoing messages. So stop blaming such and such for something you are trying to send a book of words across. You here no one complain about Twitter having a 140 character limit. Besides you can always use Messaging Plus which Sprint fully supports. If someone else had the app on there phone than it gets sent as a IM. If not, then it gets sent as a sms doing all the work in the app on the sms character limit.

Thats my point. The hangout app works on att and tmobile accounts but not on sprint accounts. So I just figured it was a sprint thing. Obviously the app is capable of doing it right.

What it does for me is, once I hit 160 characters it just stops and will not let me type anymore. I have to hit send then start a new message. I wish it worked like you stated and it would just ruin into a second message.

Yeah it's annoying with Sprint... I don't understand why in Hangouts with the N5 it just stops dead at 160 and then you have to hit send and continue your conversation... Didn't have that problem when I had my GS3 before the N5..... I didn't realize that other people with AT&T or T-Mobile could just keep typing... My contract is up in January and I am probably going to port my number over to AT&T anyway..... I've just gotten use to when I see it start counting down at 10 to find a good stopping point hit send real quick and then start a new text to send right behind it.... I've also had problems with incoming text that are sent from like my wife and are more than 160 letters getting not only split up but message two will arrive ahead of message one and I have to figure it out.... luckily it does say 2/2 and then a few seconds or even a minute later 1/2 comes in behind it.... so I'll have to wait for 1/2 so I can understand what 2/2 means.... Never had that happen on my GS3 before (or at least it was so rare I don't recall it) happens often with my N5 though....
