I have a pair of Bluetooth headphones but plan on getting a cheap wired pair as a back up for my 4XL.

Reviews seem to mention the OnePlus Type-C Bullets Earphones as the best cheap option. Anyone tried them on a Pixel phone? Better than the wired Pixel Buds?

Or do you have any other recommendations?

Unfortunately, OnePlus sends analog audio to the USB port, Pixels don't, they send digital audio, so you need a DAC in the headphones, or an adapter with a DAC (the more expensive adapters - the cheaper ones just feed analog audio from the USB port to a 3.5mm jack).

The USB audio spec calls for the phone to supply a digital signal.. any phone that pushes a powered analog signal isn't following the spec.

So the quality of sound is solely dependant on the device you plug in... Plug in a pair of C buds with a high quality DAC and amp, you'll get high quality sound.

I've always said that people who are serious about audio quality should applaud the move since they have complete control over the final sound... It's providing a clean, digital line-out. If a phone had a crap on-board DAC (and nearly every phone did), the signal will forever be degraded, no matter how nice an external DAC gets used.
