Left my usb cable at work yesterday, so I saw that most place sell the micro usb cable as a replacement. While the shape is different, I was wondering if its even compatible ?

Do any of you guys use the micro usb cable, if you do which side faces top ? the wider side or the narrow side

You can use a regular micro USB cable in the View. The View's cables don't fit my EVO phone though.

The narrow side goes up (screen side). Opposite of my EVO. I go by feel, on the EVO the prongs go up on the View they go down. Also the regular cables don't fit as snuggly so make sure you have a good connection.

The stock cable has the shape so you can't charge other micro usb devices with it, it pumps out more juice so I'd you hypothetically did it could potentially short the other device.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I cannot plug my micro usb cable into the Evo View 4G port. I'm hanging on to the OEM cable.

FYI- it's an MHL- in elementary terms, a cross between a mini-HDMI and a micro-usb cable- the port is designed to take a standard micro-usb, so if you can't get it in, you are just not orienting it correctly-

From Good and Evo a summary:

What Is MHL?

MHL stands for Mobile High-Definition Link. Version 1.0 is described as a specification that features a "single cable with a 5-pin interface able to support up to 1080p HD video and digital audio while simultaneously providing power to the mobile device and utilizing established connectors."

In oversimplified and technically incorrect but easily understandable terms, it's like a microUSB cable with special HDMI powers.

What Does It Do?

If you plug a regular microUSB cable into an MHL port, it will automatically function as a regular microUSB port, letting you transfer data to/from a computer and charge via USB. Standard stuff.

If you plug an MHL cable into an MHL port, it will automatically function as a magical HDMI port that outputs audio/video and provides power (5V, 500 mA) to the connected device. Not-so-standard stuff.

When connected to an MHL-enabled HDTV (the first ones are due for release later this year), the cable will simultaneously charge the device and output media. In other words, the TV will charge the phone while displaying its content.
When connected to an HDTV without MHL, the cable will not charge the connected device unless an MHL-HDMI adapter is used.

Go to the link for the entire article from last April; worth reading.

I've used various regular micro USB cables in my View. You do have to make sure you put it in right side up. If you feel the metal part of the connector, there will be two little prongs. If you're looking at the screen of the View, the prongs face away from you. The stock View cable also has these same prongs and face the same way.
