USB Issue - Is it S22 or Android 12?

Welcome to Android Central! My wife has had recurring problems like this in her Audi A3 etron on her Pixel 7, and I think it's been a combination of bad cables and bad car USB ports. The car's USB port seems fairly loose, which is why I suspect it. I would not be surprised at all if car manufacturers really skimped on the quality of these parts. All problems resolved when I got her a wireless Android Auto adapter similar to the Motorola MA1 (the MA1 goes for $75 on Amazon, but I got an off-brand adapter for half the price that has surprisingly been flawless).

I just traded in two s9s for s22s, and they both are having issues with USB connectivity.

The first issue has to do with connecting my car to Android Auto, which worked perfectly fine on my previous phone. Sometimes it works, and then suddenly it doesn't. I get an error message saying to replace the USB cord, but once I start getting that message, no USB cord will work. At first when this began to happen, I tried rebooting the phone and then it would work. The last time it happened, even rebooting didn't fix it, but then I uninstalled the Android Auto app, reinstalled it, re-booted and then it worked with no issues.

The second issue has to do with using a USB dongle to plug in wired headphones. Again, it sometimes works and sometimes cuts in and out. Rebooting will make it work for a while, but then it goes on the blink again.

To repeat, I'm having these issues with both phones and multiple USB cords, all of which are high quality.

The fact that a reboot or a reinstall of software temporarily solves the issues, would indicate to me that this is a software, not a hardware issue.

Anyone else experiencing this? Is it an S22 problem, or does this happen on other phones with Android 12?
What USB-C to 3.5mm adaptor are you using? If you are using an older adapter, it can cause problems. I had problems with the USB-C to 3.5mm that came with my Tab S5e. I replaced it with *cough* Apple's USB-C to 3.5mm adapter and it works great ($10 at Best Buy). If your adapter is older than three or four years old, I recommend replacing it.

As far as Android Auto, that has been problematic for a while now. I had no issues using it while I was in San Diego a few weeks ago. My rental car had it and it worked great. It was a 2024 Chevy Bolt EUV. I've used it a few times in the past year and a half with Android Auto vehicles, generally with no issues.
