usb stick to android phone?

is it possible to connect a USB stick DIRECTLY to a android phone through an adapter?
this would be very very cool!!

you would need a female USB to male microUSB cable. I am not sure the phone would power the flash drive or be able to recognize it though.

I can do this on my Hero. You need a phone with capable hardware, and a custom kernel supporting USB host and the correct F/S drivers, and as Kyle points out, the phone can't supply the power so you need to splice in a source of +5v and common.

tl;dr -- not an easy hack.
