I used to have a rooted Sprint EVO and USB tethering was as easy as plugging in the USB cable, and selecting tether from the phone's drop-down. I used this feature flawlessly on many a vacation and business trip.

Well, last year I switched to an SG3 and I am about ready to hit the road for a week and have been testing USB tethering on my rooted GS3 with my laptop (and PC). So far, no luck. The default tether function built in the phone gives me the "need a subscription" message even though I am rooted. I have been struggling to get an app called Klink working for a few hours and no luck. Klink does not even require root.

I decided to try WiFi tether which I had from my EVO days, even though I would prefer USB. but even with that I start it but it never seems to send out a WiFi signal to connect to.

I would prefer USB tethering because I have found it fast and reliable and secure in the past.

Is there a program that does easy USB tethering for rooted GS3 Verizon Users? I did some searches, not much on USB tethering and a smattering of wifi tethering success stories. I have not needed the tether function for a while. Have the carriers cracked down on this feature over the past 6 months?

I don't think being rooted or not will influence getting the "need subscription" message. I assume you are running stock/rooted. It could be more to do with your data plan. If you have the shared plan I believe that tethering is good to go, however, I've only used it via WiFi.

As for security, I'm not a security expert by any means, but a few suggestions that may help if you've not already considered.
You can filter by MAC addresses in the "Allow all devices" to connect option. Once you click there, then you can select the "Connection mode", and chose to "Allow all devices", or "Only allowed devices". Then with the "Allowed devices" option at the bottom of the HotSpot screen, that's where you can add the MAC address and set the real or an arbitrary name for your laptop or other devices. Another filter layer is the option to hide your S3's SSID in the "Configure" option. So, unless someone is sniffing around and can intercept your S3's HotSpot once enabled, spoof a MAC address that's in your "Allowed devices" list, then the risk should be low. Recognize, however, that this level of security may not meet your requirements, so understand the need to go USB if that's a better fit for you. Now if there's a security issue or bug out there with the S3's HotSpot that poses a concern, then that's a bigger risk and one that folks would probably like to understand more about.

I am running the latest Clean Rom, Jellybean version. Are there ROMs out there where USB and WiFi tethering work without a third party program or subscription plan?

I have a shared data plan. With my previous phone I could use USB tether after root no problem.

I did get version of wifi tether for Jellybean ROMs working. If I plug the phone in to the laptops USB while I use wifi tether will the power drain be less than the power charge from the laptop.

I'm also running the latest version of clean rom and wifi tether works great.
