So this might be a silly question, but these two terms have been thrown around a lot and I was just wondering what the difference between the two is?

Both are methods to share 3G/4G internet connection. USB tethering is when you connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable. Mobile hotspot is when your phone acts as a wireless access point through it's WiFi radio. This way, anything WiFi enabled can connect to it (PC, notebook, tablet, other phones even), and you don't need additional software installed on the connecting computer like with tethering.

exactly foxman. And yeah USB tethering and WiFi Hotspot will be available in android 2.2 a.k.a froyo. hurray.. :D

I like the hotspot feature in FroYo, but will the carriers?

Yeah that is the question. It's still not confirmed that it will be available for carriers or not. sorry :( . I will update you if I get any news regarding it. :)

You can always install an app like pdaNet from the market, but the carriers typically charge you. For Verizon I recall it being about $30. But you have to compare this cost with if you bought a separate 3G card for your laptop, which typically run about $50 per month I think. If you really want the mobile wifi hotspot take a look at the EVO or the Pre Plus on Verizon (comes with wifi hotspot free) or you could always get something like a mifi
