Use Gear S2 SMS and different Default SMS on phone?

Has anyone figured out a way to use the SMS app in their Gear without using the default SMS app on their GS6? I know I can get the notifications from any app, but I like bing able to open the watch's SMS app and look at old messages I've already cleared or acknowledged. Or to start a new message. I can't seem to do that when I have Google Messenger as my default SMS app on the GS6 (just as I can't do it with Hangouts or Gmail, for instance).

It should be possible for more than one app to interact with the SMS database since I already have an SMS backup program and MightyText interacting with my SMS messages from my phone. Maybe Samsung just chooses not to allow that functionality for the watch and phone interaction?

Would be great if there was a work-around. I just stopped using the stock sms app on my GS7E and haven't been able to see conversations on my gear. Kinda sucks.
