I had the same problem when I tried SimpleRoot the first few times. Here is what I think the problem is -
When completing step 3 - you open the Flash page in your browser and the instructions say to reload the page. Before the page loads, the command prompt screen updates with instructions to press any key to continue. At this point I would proceed and end up with the Step 4 problem.
The issue is that reloading the page is the important part of this step. If you don't reload, the exploit that allows you to downgrade does not work. A few people reported that they would close the browser and load the page again to get it to work.

Finally got it to work this a.m.
Previously, I had just reloaded the flash page. The *only* thing I did differently was to force close the Internet, then reopen it. It would seem it makes all the difference in the world.
Edit: I did this using the regular 3G connection, so having wi-fi isn't a prerequisite as previously thought.
Thanks to all those that helped me resolve this. For others having this issue, try what I tried and post your results so we can amend the instructions.
Just got finished rooting my friend's phone who was in the exact same boat. Tried it both ways (reloading page vs force stopping/restarting). Reloading doesn't work. Force stopping it does, and after that, all is well.
