If I'm using an email app other than Gmail, it appears my Gmail accounts are still set up in the Gmail app by default (i.e. the core Google accounts on my phone). Does this use extra storage since both email apps are retrieving my Google email? Thanks.

You can disable Gmail in
Settings > Apps > App Manager
or with a 3rd party app like BK Disabler.

I never use the Gmail app. I access some accts with the built-in Samsung app, and some with K9 Mail.

I use a combination. I use Outlook, "Inbox" from Google, Gmail, and a browser shortcut I have to Gmail and Google calendar. Just go into the App Manager and disable the appropriate App. I also have notifications disabled for all except one.

Thanks.

Regarding Outlook, I like it but each time I've tried it, it gets slower and slower -- for instance when trying to select accounts or folders. I admittedly have a LOT of sub-folders on my work email, so maybe that's the problem.

I keep the Gmail app to have contacts and calendar synced with my Gmail but use a different email app for my Gmail mail. Just turn off email sync in the Gmail account. Everything else will sync and your alternate email app can handle email sync.

What alternate Gmail app do you use and what do you like about it?

I am using the stock email app which comes with the Note 8. Works fine. Any good app which has settings for push notifications should work OK with Gmail.

Using K9 here, because it seems to be the only email client that supports encrypted password authentication.

You can still disable Gmail. I also sync to contacts & calendar, but keep Gmail disabled. (I have mail unchecked for sync in accounts as well.)

I've been using Maildroid for a couple years. My Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo all get pushed here. Very customizable. Been happy with it.

I use BlueMail on tablet and a TypeApp on my Note 8. Both have very similar layout and functionality and both are highly customizable and a pleasure to use. Highly recommended.
