Is there a way to use a smartphone on Verizon without having to pay for a data plan.

I think they require you to carry some sort of data plan with a Smartphone... If it was pay as you go, you would have to be damn sure you have everything locked down not to update in order to not get hit with a huge bill...

You have to have a data plan........it is a requirement on all smartphones and no getting around it.

Thanks for the info. I would really like to get my boys (ages 10 & 12) a smartphone but I can't justify paying for the internet on them as they have multiple devices already that they can use for the internet. I thought about going with Sprint because they give discounts on the total bill not just the main phone line like Verizon. I could have all my phones with internet and texting for less than what I pay for without the internet and texting with Verizon. My only problem is the quality of Sprint's service. I heard they got better over the years but I would have to do a trial with them before switching all my phones to them.

I have 2 lines and I am primary and I get a (rather small) corporate discount thru Verizon and it discounts my entire bill, not just my portion. 2nd line is a BlackBerry and it discounts that portion of internet, unlimited text add-on etc...

I used to get a discount on my internet but the county I work for and Verizon renegotiated their terms and now I don't get it. All I get now is 19% off the main line which comes out to an $11 savings. It all depends who you work for and what they will discount I guess.

anicholas7,

I was in the same boat, wanted to get my 10 year a cell for X-Mas, but didn't want to get a data plan. I ended up getting her a Kin ONEm. Yeah, I know its not Android, but no data plan required, slideout KB and has WIFI for Internet. I went one further and had the broadband data blocked, so the Internet only works with the WIFI. Its by no means a smartphone, but its kindda cool and has all the basics functions tweens and young teens need (or should I say want). Hope this helps.

It's been said but you need a data plan with smartphone. If you can't afford or don't want unlimited data than just turn off data usage and only use WiFi to make sure you don't use more data than you have available. You'll be surprised how many people still don't secure their network or just offer free WiFi.
