Hi, I am planning a backcountry hiking/climbing vacation and would like to use the GPS on my Razr Maxx HD to track my location, elevation, etc... I am not interested in using it for directions/maps. Does anyone know if the GPS will work in these conditions? Thanks.

It will work fine but you need something like this if you want off the grid topo mapping:

As long as you can see the sky the GPS works like any other GPS.

There are a number of GPS programs that will give you a course track on a basemap. Try Cachesense. It's for geocaching but it works pretty well. But yeah there are enough to choose from. Just be sure they give you a basemap or some way to download one from either google or one of the public license maps. Search under hiking and hunting GPS, As long as you have a clear view and a basemap you're good to go.
