Using hangouts with Verizon

I've been told that if you pop a Verizon sim card into the 2013 Nexus 5, you can put the phone in LTE mode, and use your google voice number with hangouts and seamlessly make calls and texts.

Has anyone tested this? How is it?

I'm sort of looking for the same info on integrating GV with Hangouts. I use GV to sync calls and text messages across multiple mobile numbers/handsets.

All the links I've found are from a year ago. I'm looking for news, FAQs, guides that are a little more recent.
