Using keyword shortcuts

Hi

New to Android, and Im trying to work something out.

Ive recently switched from iPhone and Im trying to get the phrase/shortcut working in Android JB 4.2.1 on my Nexus 4

In iOS I just type my shortcut, eg 'emx' for my email address then space bar and my email address appears

In Android, I have to hope there is a suggestion bar above the keyboard and select it from there.

However in 75% of cases this doesnt appear. eg Chrome search/address bar, Wunderlist when signing in to app or adding a new item (However when writing a note it appears)

What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to get the suggestion bar (or whatever it is called) always appear?

was in similar situation recently myself.
swich to other keyboards
SlideIt, and Smart Keyboard both have text expander shortcut functions like the Iphone.
both have free trial apps
