Android Central Question

Hi there.

My dad wants to switch his Galaxy S7 to a Pixel 3a XL. We have the Pixel 3a XL in hand and... we just can't connect his Google Play account which is on his hotmail account. Yet, Google absolutely wants a Gmail account. If we create one, he'll lose absolutely everything he had on his hotmail account.

Is there a way, a backdoor, to login using an Hotmail account?
And, yes, if I click the hamburger menu on his S7 on Play Store and check "my account", it says _______@hotmail.com.

Cheers.

Welcome to Android Central! Go to Settings>Accounts>Google. Is his Google account there listed with his hotmail address?

Can he go to Google.com on his computer browser and sign into his Google account there by entering his hotmail address as his username?

That's a good point.
He his a trucker. So, he has his S7 on him and I have his new phone here.

I can test loging in Google here though.
Otherwise, I'll have to wait to tomorrow when I can call him.

(EDIT: Yes, I'm the OP)

EDIT2: Tried logging in on Google.com, I receive the same error as I do on the phone. "If you've signed in to Google products like YouTube, try again with that email"

This is a bit puzzling -- when he created his Google account, he should've also had a Gmail account created as well. He would've then just associated the Hotmail address with the account: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/176347?co=GENIE.Platform=Desktop&hl=en

You'll probably want to wait until he gets home, but ask him to see what happens if he uses this account recovery page: https://accounts.google.com/signin/...flowName=GlifWebSignIn&flowEntry=ServiceLogin

Agreed. I think the way we're going to solve this, is by finding out what email address he created his account with. I think this Support page from Google is going to help: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6316959?co=GENIE.Platform=Android&hl=en

If we can see it there, then, it's pretty much settled.

He'll only be coming back in 10 or so days - he didn't have time to set it up before going (he's a trucker) so that's why I have the phone with me.

Yup. I did the above. We discovered the original email and everything went smoothly from there. It was indeed a GMail address... it was a 1-letter extra in difference of what we thought it was.

All is good now.
