I'm going to Japan for sightseeing in two months, and have been batting around the idea of using my Razr as a fallback for getting around if we get lost. Verizon says it's locked and a foreign sim won't work, but the internet says that it will work on non-USA GSM networks. I searched the forums here, but couldn't find anything.

Any experience in getting it to work on a foreign GSM/UMTS network? I would love to use DoCoMo's 3G Foma network.

You should be able to pop a local prepaid sim in and it should work. Don't listen to Verizon

Razr and Razr Maxx have the exact same hardware except for the battery.

Can you do the same with Razr that is not a Razr Maxx do you know?? and how do the pre-paid ones work?

Both will work with prepaid sim. The easiest way is to buy a prepaid sim over in the country that you are traveling to. Prepaid sims give you a local phone number and usually come with some airtime. You can add more money to your sim if desired. Once you are or if money on the sim, you won't be able to make any calls till you add more money.

I used mine in Bogota, Colombia last year. It was outrageous like 3 bucks a minute and $.50 per text but it did work. Just make sure to change your settings on your verizon setup online. Mine was set to US and Canada, changed to Global and worked like a charm. I shut off mobile data but that would prob have worked too.
