Using SD card on Moto G6?

I need to ask again - could I format it as internal, store pictures along with some apps, and be able move the pictures onto my laptop via USB from that card?

Yes, that should be fine. The card should be regarded by the phone as part of its Internal Storage, and therefore show up on Windows File Explorer when you connect via USB.

I understand the problem with factory reset - but in that case - is the data erased, or still there on the card taking up space, but not retrievable?

That's a good question -- I'm not sure if the SD card gets physically wiped, or if it just becomes irretrievable due to loss of the encryption key. The two situations are practically identical, though, so the answer would just be academic.

If I decide to forego the new larger card, and just move the SD card from my old LG into the Moto - then it would remain as portable storage? And could I then access all of the pictures and files on it already since it would not have been reformatted?

Yes, the card from the old LG (which is formatted as Portable Storage) would act the same way in the new Moto phone. All media files and documents should be accessible.

Thanks so much! I guess I can try it as internal and see how that works, since that is probably the way I'd want it to work to give it more storage. I can always reformat it to portable - just keeping in mind that I'll lose whatever is on it, right. And I can play around with the old card first, too.

I also found that I can use a thumbdrive plugged into the C port, too, so that's another way to move those pictures.

Thanks so much for all of the suggestions and help! Much appreciated! :)
