Using Skype on the Note

Hi folks, I'm currently a Nexus One owner but I'm hoping to upgrade to a Note in the next few weeks. One of the big plus-points for me will be finally having a front-facing camera so I can use Skype for video calls - what are your experiences using the Skype app on the Note? Do video calls work fine, and can you have them full-screen? Also, have you used it over 3G and how have you found that?

Any replies greatly appreciated!

Thanks

It is freaking awesome on 4G.
Not a single dropped frame, then again probably not a lot of users yet.

I will be in Florida on holiday from the UK in August. I will have the Note by then (at last!) and will be looking to use a local SIM, maybe T-Mobile, for calls, texts and data. Unfortunately, as the phone isn't 1700-compatible it will only work on 2G on the package I am looking at. Will I be able to use Skype on it over 2G? I will be able to use Wifi in the villa but, due to the time difference, this will be at inconvenient times to Skype the family in the UK so would prefer to be doing it during the daytime while out and about.

At first had considerable difficulty due to Dtac, my server in Thailand, was far too slow using 3G -- for instance couldn't open a website before it would time out, and Skype was hopeless. Visited the office of Samsung CareLess and was told they make 2 models -- the one I have is for another ISP. Immediately went to Dtac and in seconds was shown a setting and now the internet flies. FYI, that setting is Settings/Wireless & Net/Mobile Networks/Network Mode must be on GSMWCDMA (Auto Mode) not GSM only.

Don't believe Samsung will remain in business much longer, at least in Thailand, giving out this misinformation!

I have been using Skype on Note Gt-N7000 for a week with 3G talking and video conversations between Thailand and USA and it works like a charm. Pics are clear and voice is without fault except the connection occasionally breaks then auto restarts. And the videos are great sized full screen.

Would appreciate it if anyone can answer my question at No. 6 above re whether Skype works over 2G?

I just tested it and it works for me on Edge. But its kind of slow(as to be expected). You have to note though that I dont have the best 2G connection at my place so your results may vary.

Tested:
Messaging = Working.
Calling to PC = Working.

Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to test that. When you say it is slow on Edge can you hold a normal conversation or does it break up?

Well, I had 3-4 Lines on Edge so it could be better, but I think a normal conversation should be doable. On 3G or better it shouldnt be a problem at all. :)

I have an International N7000. I use the AT&T celltowers in the USA via the mnvo (reseller) called StraightTalk (google it)(starter pack approx $70 includes first month). I get about 3Mbps HSDPA and 1.5Mbps HSUPA reliably. Some regions have faster celltowers, but that avergae speed should be plenty for a good solid Skype connection.

I was at LAX last week, and for some reason couldn't log into Google Voice with my GrooveIP. Perhaps the cells in that area are filtered, I don't know. Anyway, I haven't had any trouble with GrooveIP anywhere else on the West Coast yet...

I think depending on where you are in fl. We here in the"305" have wifi almost everywhere, malls, coffe shops, public transportation, MC D's. I don't think youll have any problems:-)

Thanks for the replies. We'll be in Orlando, doing the Disney parks, Universal , Sea World etc and I was quite surprised to find that there is very little wifi inside the parks. That's why I've been looking into ways of getting online while there as, apart from the Skype issue, there are apps which give info on lines, weather, travel etc which I think would be useful. Glad to know that wifi is freely available elsewhere though!
