I've read where some have used an app to use their non-ir blaster notes as a remote.
Do any of you successfully use your Note 8 as a remote for your TV?
If so, which app?
I've seen a few but they require you to buy a wifi to ir blaster unit or something.

I can control my Directv received with
an app they have. Works fine. Not actually controlling the tv itself.

Haven't set anything up for that on this phone, (only had it about 24 hrs) but, there's an app called Peel Remote in the P. Store. It's free & you don't have to purchase anything. Just need to connect it using the code for your TV which the app walks you through, it's easy. I used it on my Note 4 & it worked great!

But that was because the note 4 has an IR blaster.
Sadly they decided we didn't need the IR blaster.
And yes it works great in my Note 4!

Depends what TV you have
If you have a Samsung TV, you can use the "Smart Connect" app to control your TV...it's what I use

Almost all smart devices have a remote control app on the playstore for the Note. I use Xbox360 Glass for my Xbox, Samsung Connect for my Samsung TV, (other smart TV's like LG have a remote app as well), and I even have a remote for my computer on their as well. I miss the IR blaster as well, but since most devices are now being made to be connected to each other, I can see how it would just become an added piece of un-needed hardware in the next few years, and 'non-smart' tv's life cycle is really coming to an end.

What was kind of worse is that even devices WITH an IR blaster they're disabling it via software updates. My Tab4 has an IR blaster.... Samsung killed it.

stay away from PEEL remote, battery zapping spy/bloat app in my experience/opinion

Most tv manufacturers and cable companies have apps in the Play store to control their TVs and boxes. I'm using the lg tv plus app for my tv and it works well. Same goes for my cable box. No extra hardware required. As long as the hardware is on the same WiFi network as my phone then it works as is.

Note 4 has an ir blaster note 8 does not. So these apps will not work.

WRONG - the new technology is all Bluetooth, which both the Note8 and most smart TV now utilize. My standard TV remote uses it with my current Samsung TV. IR Blaster is now old school

You're right, Jay
