using z2 successfully without data plan

Has anyone been able to use their z2 as an AT&T phone without a data plan by just turning off the mobile data?

My mom does that with her xperia P with no problems for nearly a year now. But I wonder if the reason the phone doesn't register with at&t as a smartphone is because of how old it is and because it was bought in Hong Kong originally, not just because she has mobile data turned off.

I think you would find it hard to use without one but I'm sure it's possible.

I'm thinking if I turn off mobile data always it probably will work. Saw a thread on xda developer's forum that said you might get caught with a z2 but I think those people were using a tiny amount of mobile data.

I use my Xperia Z2 without a data plan. I'm using Consumer Cellular, and they use the ATT network. Works great. 4G, Wi/fi, etc. It is better in every way than my Sprint Samsung GS4. And far cheaper network charge. I followed Consumer Cellular instructions to setup Z2.
