Its a big difference in quality with Google camera so far. At least twice the detail and much better colors. I'll see if I can put some shots together.

You are right it doesn't use the wide angle, but the 8mp wide angle in low light is terrible anyways. It gets too noisy with the higher ISO.

One tidbit i learned from another article ,was that leave the HDR+ in "on" mode, and not "auto". With "on", it is continuously taking photos of what you are looking at and adds that to the eventual shot taken. So its just more level of detail and photos to merge all into one. Auto is nicknamed HDR+ light because of that.

I guess this deserve its own thread if you mods want to move it. Kind of getting of topic. Sorry!
